Graffiti Project - A Joint Initiative
The KDYS Graffiti Project supported by Jigsaw Kerry, and the Killarney Looking Good Committee completely changed the face of a wall adjacent to MD O Shea’s in the outskirts of Killarney this weekend. Having overcome two previous postponements due to terrible weather conditions, young people finally secured the opportunity to reveal their artistic potential.
The theme for discussion on the day was ‘Youth Mental Health’ and young people who are all involved in various KDYS Projects gathered together to portray their images of what Youth Mental Health meant to them. The focus of this Project was multifaceted – firstly to create awareness amongst young people by promoting positive concepts such as young people’s strengths and supports, secondly raising awareness amongst the general public as they drive pass this newly decorated wall and thirdly highlight the importance of working in partnership with other agencies to enhance young people civic responsibilities.
The Project was facilitated by KDYS Youth Worker Caroline Killeen and local Graffiti Artist Taz. Strong linkages were made with both Jigsaw Kerry and members of the Killarney Looking Good Committee around this Graffiti Project. The young people involved were delighted with the opportunity to be part of such an exciting Project and welcome any other such opportunities that may present for their involvement in Community Initiatives.
